The battle lines have been drawn and the highly anticipated 2009 Ashes series got under way in Cardiff today, and it seems as though the rowdy Barmy Army and the rest of the "Pommie" public feel as though England actually have a chance of wrenching the historic piece from the Baggy Greens. As much as I like to see the arrogant Aussies lose, I don't see it happening this year.
Apart from "the South African" and the great Freddie Flintoff, the Poms lack true class and mental strength, and may find it difficult to compete with a solid Australian outfit with a score to settle. In saying that however, look at 2005 where England went into the series as underdogs and came out deserved victors.
A new generation of English and Aussie cricketing stars will also be eager to stamp their mark down over the next couple of months, with the likes of Stuart Broad and Ravi Bopara locking horns with Phil Hughes and Peter Siddle for what will be the first of many enthralling Ashes encounters to come between them over the next decade.
Zacka says.........Australia to win 3-0.
Here's to a summer of cricket and the greatest battle of them all! Let's hope it's played in the same spirit and entertaining way as it was in 2005.
